TOUR SUMMARY

9 Day SUPERCHARGED NZ Tour

Christchurch - Auckland

  Customer Reviews

A wicked mix of the well known hotspots and the best kept secrets of both South and North Islands...

Our 9 day adventure tour is a great option if you have some time between Christchurch and Auckland and will maximise your time travelling between them. It is suitable for both those travellers who want a taste of New Zealand, AND those who have already spent some time here. We show you our capital city Wellington alongside some truly untouched parts of the country.

We are particularly proud of our accommodation choices for this tour. In Punakaiki we stay at a retreat surrounded by pure West Coast rainforest just 5 minutes from the beach. Along the outskirts of Abel Tasman National Park we spend the night on a 100 acre farm nestled in the Marahau Valley. On day 7, River Valley is a unique adventure lodge situated far from urban life – a beautiful setting perfect for both relaxing and finding adventure!

A Haka Tour is not just a standard New Zealand holiday. We promise you will leave having both learned and experienced our country first hand, pushed yourself to limits you never thought you could reach, made a great group of friends from all around the world, and played a role in a thousand stories to amaze the folks with back home.

Day 1 - Christchurch to Punakaiki

Day 1 - Christchurch to Punakaiki

Kia Ora and welcome to New Zealand!

As the internationally famed 'Garden City', Christchurch's well-established expansive parks and public gardens are guaranteed to impress. Wide tree-lined avenues, beautifully maintained gardens, ambling inner-city rivers and restored heritage buildings make this a picture-perfect city with a definite English feel. At the centre of the inner city, the neo-Gothic Cathedral is a well-depicted Canterbury icon.

Should you wish to have more time to explore and experience Christchurch, we offer extra nights’ accommodation before your tour from $29 NZD per night. This tour doesn’t include time in the ‘Garden City’ as we set off immediately on day 1 for the West Coast.

Rather than begin your tour with a long drive, we introduce you to the Southern Alps on the epic Tranz Alpine Train Crossing, which takes you through the spectacular Arthur’s Pass to Greymouth. It is here that your guide will pick you up from the station at lunch time.

A town forged in the rush for gold in the 19th Century, Greymouth is situated just 40 minutes from Punakaiki. We spend the afternoon exploring both Greymouth and the wild West Coast – a rugged, primeval landscape of luxuriant rainforest juxtaposed against breathtaking beach and ocean waves.

Your accommodation for the first two nights is the unique Te Nikau Retreat. A firm favourite on tour, Te Nikau consists of spacious lodges and cabins set in peaceful rainforest just set off the beach. In the evening we watch the sunset over the ocean and cook dinner together as a group.

Te Nikau Retreat

Day 2 - Punakaiki

Day 2 - Punakaiki

We allow you a whole day to explore the untouched region of the West Coast. Surfing, horse trekking, kayaking, four wheel driving, walking or simply taking in the view are all great activities here! The climate is one of the wettest in New Zealand, with a high level of rain brought from across the Tasman sea.

Just 3km south of our accommodation, the village of Punakaiki is world famous for its 'Pancake Rocks', which are huge columns of limestone resembling stacks of pancakes. With a heavy swell running at high tide, seawater is forced upwards through blowholes with an impressive roar.

Alternatively you can spend the day making your very own knife in Barrytown! Start by forging your own blade from red hot steel, and then complete your knife with native timber handle, brass bolsters and pins. And don’t worry about taking it home – hundreds of people have travelled with their knives. This can be a great group activity on a rainy day!

Day 3 - Punakaiki to Abel Tasman

Day 3 - Punakaiki to Abel Tasman

With a lot of ground to cover, we leave Te Nikau Retreat early, heading north along the State Highway 6. There is a stunning beach beside the Fox River where we can explore some awesome caves and just ten kilometres west of Westport is Cape Foulwind where there is a fur seal colony accessible by a walking track. Weather and time dependent, your guide may stop here for you to take a look.

Westport is home to a company that specialises in various adventure activities, including quad biking, extreme jet boating and river rafting along the Buller River. The river is one of the longest in the country and we travel alongside it for much of the day.

We reach our accommodation by early evening – a farm situated just on the outskirts of Abel Tasman National Park. In the summer there is a great opportunity for a swim in the river, but we wouldn’t recommend it in the winter!

Day 4 - Abel Tasman National Park

Day 4 - Abel Tasman National Park

Today is all about exploring Abel Tamsan National Park – New Zealand’s smallest, but by no means least beautiful, national parks. One way to experience the park is by kayak. No previous experience is required as qualified guides will teach you all the basic skills to make sure this is a safe, yet awesome activity!

Alternatively, there are numerous half and full day walks, including transport via water taxi. These explore both the inland forest and many stunning secluded beaches, all of which we guarantee will take your breath away!

In the summer, we stay the night within the park on an ex-navy marine boat docked in one of the bays. This is a truly special experience where everyone can bunk in together! BBQ are snorkeling provided free of charge and we will often sit out on the deck in the evening with a drink or two.

In the winter, we head to Nelson in the afternoon – just under an hour away. Nelson is the sunshine capital of New Zealand, with over 2,000 hours every year. It is also home to the geographical ‘Centre of Zealand’ on Botanical Hill where you can take a walk to witness the superb panoramic views of coast and countryside.

Day 5 - Nelson to Wellington

Day 5 – Nelson to Wellington

To visit the Nelson region is to discover azure skies and wide open spaces, beaches and lakes, vineyards and gourmet cafés, artists and galleries and boutique shopping experiences... it’s no surprise that the locals love to holiday here! The morning is for your own leisure time, but your guide will be on hand to give suggestions.

In the afternoon we drive to Picton, stopping along the way at Havelock, the centre of the New Zealand green-lipped mussel industry. The Mussel Pot Café is a popular place for seafood fans!

There is a short amount time to explore Picton, but the harbour town is small so you won’t find heaps to do! If there is time your guide may take you for a cultural walk to learn more about the area. At 5.30pm we board the ferry to Wellington, a crossing which takes 3 hours but is regarded as one of the most beautiful ferry journeys in the world.

By the time we reach the capital it is 10pm and so the rest of the evening is up to you. Our accommodation is very central – situated next to Courtney Place where there is some of the best nightlife in the country!

Day 6 - Wellington to River Valley

Day 6 - Wellington to River Valley

Perched on the edge of a spectacular harbour, encircled by green, towering hills, Wellington is a stunning and compact city. Vibrant, exciting and cultured, the nation’s capital combines the stimulation and sophistication of a big city with the quirkiness of a charming village. Extending just two kilometres in diameter, it is a truly 'walking city’ and can be easily explore on foot.

As always your tour guide will introduce you to the city with an orientation tour – including a drive around the bays, Weta Studios, up to the lookout point at Mount Victoria and then through central Wellington. If you are interested you may also take a ride on the cable car, through the Botanic Gardens and around the Parliament Buildings.

Alternatively, pay a visit to our national museum, Te Papa. Wellington has a feast of cultural attractions but Te Papa is its crowning glory. Situated on Wellington’s magnificent waterfront, it combines leading edge technology with traditional exhibits to tell the stories of New Zealand’s land and people. Best of all, it is free for everyone!

In the late afternoon we depart the city, heading north. Just a short way east from Taihape is one of our favourite locations on tour: the River Valley lodge.

There really is nowhere else like River Valley – this place epitomises tranquility… with a streak of adrenalin running through its belly! The lodge which offers a complete range of New Zealand adventure activities. This includes world class grade 5 white-water rafting, inflatable kayaking, scenic eco-rafting, horse trekking, guided natural and cultural interpretive bush walks and fly fishing.

Everything here is first-class, set amongst a backdrop of mother nature’s best work. Most of the activities take place in the next morning, so you can relax in the spa pool or chill out in the cosy lounge area. There is also a bar and good food is provided for a very reasonable price.

Day 7 - River Valley to National Park

Day 7 - River Valley to National Park

In the morning it is your chance to go white-water rafting or horse trekking! Both come highly recommended but alas there is only time for one. Alternatively you can relax at the lodge or play on the nine hole pitch and putt golf course!

We leave after lunch, and after a short drive reach National Park village, situated on the border of the world heritage Tongariro and Whanganui National Parks. In the summer the region provides awesome walks, biking and kayaking trails but in the winter it turns into an alpine ski resort, with easy access onto Mt Ruapehu’s ski fields.

Our accommodation is at The Park Travellers Lodge, complete with bar and lounge area, BBQ, heated spa pool, open fireplaces and stunning mountain views... paradise.

Day 8 - National Park to Raglan

Day 8 - National Park to Raglan

A three hour drive brings us to the west coast town of Raglan. Raglan is known as the surfing capital of New Zealand, with world famous breaks found at 3 points: Manu Bay, Whale Bay and The Indicators. This is the hottest surfing mecca in NZ. Our adventure lodge accommodation offers a number of surfing packages for all levels of experience.

If surfing is not high on your agenda, no worries! Raglan has some stunning geography, and after a short trek down to the bottom of Bridal Veil Falls you will witness a spectacular view of a natural waterfall.

Artwork is also abundant in the cafes of Raglan and a must see is the Aqua Velvet. The only artist's work displayed this year has been of Maori carver Aaron Kereopa. He carves surfboard blanks into traditional Maori designs. These carvings stand out not only for their size, but also for their intricate Polynesian designs and three-dimensional shapes.

Raglan is definitely New Zealand's piece of bohemia and we are sure that it will leave you just like it leaves us: spellbound and reluctant to return to the big city environment of Auckland!

Day 9 - Raglan to Auckland

Day 9 - Raglan to Auckland

Before you know it, it’s your final day. You can spend the morning learning to surf or explore the town. We reach Auckland by 5pm to say our final goodbyes. If you wish to explore the city you are welcome to stay for longer by booking extra nights’ accommodation. We often find the majority of a group will stay around for at least one more night!

After your tour

Customer Reviews

Feedback from people who have been on this tour!

“The experience that Haka Tours gave me was so amazing, I can honestly proclaim it was THE BEST holiday experience of my life. The pace of the trip was superb, averaging 1-2 activities a day so that one gets his/her adrenaline fix while not getting too tired. I was on the 9 day tour which included the north and south islands, and oh I wish I had done a longer tour! From staying on a farm, a boat (the Aquapackers!!!), next to the sea, all the accommodations were interesting and very authentic. Not to mention the wonderful activities we could include along the way... sky diving, bungy and white water rafting just to name a few. Of course, a great part of the success of the tour was due to the crazy awesome Verve, our tour guide, who knew New Zealand from leaf to bark to river, and could illustrate the histories and stories behind every single place we visited, like he had lived there since the Maori times! I would highly, highly recommend Haka Tours to anyone who wants an amazing trip for a more-than reasonable price. I will DEFINITELY be going for a Haka tour again in the future!”

“Being a lone traveller, I was studying in Australia for five months and before heading back to the US, I wanted to travel NZ. After looking at all the other tours, I decided to book through HAKA because the price, list of activities they had to offer, and it was the best experience and decision I ever made. I was only in NZ for a week and had the best time of my life. The tour guides were very personable, they did what YOU wanted, and showed you the best scenes and activities NZ has to offer. I know in the future, when I head back to NZ, I'm booking through HAKA again.”
