Fox Peak Location: 198km from Christchurch Beginner: 25% Intermediate: 50% Advanced: 25% Fox Peak is operated by a non profit ski club. It is renowned for its friendliness, mountain accommodation, wide-open spaces and huge runs for all levels of enthusiast. Apart from the learner and intermediate slopes the snow is left in its natural state enabling you to find that special trail that turns you on for that day. Four rope tows total over 2km in length provide you with a fabulous 580 metres of vertical lift - the highest in the region. Any patron will be willing to assist you operate the nut crackers correctly to ensure you will soon master them and that have access to many exciting club ski and boarding areas. Mt. Dobson Size: 400 skiable hectares Location: 174 km from Christchurch Beginner: 30% Intermediate: 50% Advanced: 20% Mount Dobson Ski Area turnoff is situated 11km's west of Fairlie township on the main Christchurch / Queenstown Highway. The access road is a wide smooth mountain road arguably the easiest alpine road in New Zealand. There is plenty of level parking at the base facilities and shuttle service is available weekends and holidays. Facilities include a warm cafeteria, ski and snowboard rental, ski patrol and ski/snowboard school. Mount Dobson is owned and operated by the Foote Family who have made it their commitment to make this the friendliest ski area around. With regular snowfalls on its peaks and across its wide open slopes, Mt Dobson offers a fun skiing and snowboarding for everyone. It is well suited to families, beginners and intermediates, but high above the groomed slopes there is soft smooth powder to challenge the best skiers and snowboarders.
Roundhill Size: 60 skiable hectares Location: 32km from Tekapo Beginner: 30% Intermediate: 60% Advanced: 10% Roundhill's main lift is a T-Bar, New Zealand's longest at 1.2km with 255m of vertical. The learner platter lift is situated on a wide gentle slope, especially for beginners. We are making the most of Mackenzie Country's cold temperatures and low humidity with our new snowmaking system, so we can guarantee Roundhill as your family ski area every season. Roundhill offers the latest Ski and snowboard rental equipment. They also offer a comprehensive ski-school, plus café and dayroom. The newly renovated facilities combined with the views, the sunshine, the wide undulating terrain and the relaxed atmosphere create a wonderful environment for you and your family to enjoy. Hanmer Springs Size: 52 skiable hectares Location: 149km from Christchurch Beginner: 10% Intermediate: 60% Advanced: 30% Experienced Ski Instructors are on hand to help you get the most out of our skiing, and qualified ski patrollers are always on duty. Access to the runs is by way of one of the longest poma lifts in the country and two rope tows. These run virtually from dawn to dusk, until most of the skiers have more than exhausted all the opportunities. Why should we cut someone's fun short? The Ski Area is run by the Amuri Ski Club (Inc.) and one of the beauties of a club rather than a commercial field is that the only timetable we have to adhere to is our own. Another advantage is that tow fees are very reasonable because we want people to be able to afford to ski.Mt. Lyford Size: 240 skiable hectares Location: 146 km from Christchurch Beginner: 30% Intermediate: 40% Advanced: 30% Mt Lyford facilities include: Terako Day Lodge, Chamois Cafe, Ticket Office, First Aid, Ski & Snowboard Hire. It offers a ski & snowboard scool for all ages and abilites, operated 6 snowgroomers and one half-pipe shredder. Activities include skiing, snowboarding, tubing, racing, tobogganing, and other fun activities. Terrain features include: Wild Ride Terrain Park (jumps, kickers, rails), R & R Sport Kaikoura Half Pipe, Quarter Pipe, International Truck Jump, Basin described as a Natural Terrain Park. Established in 2004 the Wild Ride Terrain Park has been a fantastic addition to Mt Lyford Alpine Resort, which is already described as a natural terrain park. The man made features of the terrain park add a more exciting and challenging aspect to the resort. The Wild Ride Terrain Park has been set up in its own basin to the right of the Cloudy T-bar. The park has a lead in through a natural terrain shoot with a snow cornice up to the left perfect for wing overs. The Remarkables Size: 220 skiable hectares Location: 28k from Queenstown Beginner: 30% Intermediate: 40% Advanced: 30% Situated high in The Remarkables mountain range and surrounded by craggy peaks, The Remarkables Alpine Park provides a spectacular, true alpine environment. Extending over 700 hectares of reserve land, there’s 220 skiable hectares accessed by three quad chairs within three sunny, wide open bowls. Shadow Basin, has open intermediate and advanced runs, Shadow Bowl and the Alta Chair have plenty of long, wide open beginner and intermediate runs. Shadow Basin and Sugar bowl are lift accessed and traversing from the Shadow Basin chairlift will get you to Lake Alta with its off-piste steeps and shoots. From the first timer through to those who like to be challenged by narrow chutes, rock drops and off-piste powder, The Remarkables is all about fun, families, freestyle and the love of the big mountain environment. For backcountry lovers, the 1.5km Homeward Bound is considered the best in-bounds backcountry run, and a short walk from the Shadow Basin Chair delivers access into the chutes’ amazing big mountain terrain. For the not-so-serious, slide down groomed tracks on specifically designed inner-tubes in The Ozone Tubing Park – a must for pure fun seekers. New for 2008, “The Stash” project – a Burton signature terrain park, the first in the Southern Hemisphere, adds a kilometre long feature packed “back-country park experience”. This compliments the existing 150m FIS specification Parklife Superpipe, FruJu Beginner Park and UP & GO Terrain Park. The Remarks is a true freestyle haven with jibs for all levels. Treble Cone Size: 550 skiable hectares Location: 19km from Wanaka Beginner: 10% Intermediate: 45% Advanced: 45% Treble Cone is the largest ski area in the South Island. With the longest vertical rise in the Southern Lakes (705m), longest groomed intermediate runs (4km) and spectacular views over Lake Wanaka and Mount Aspiring, Treble Cone can claim some of the most exhilarating skiing and snowboarding conditions in the country. It is however the snow quality that really sets Treble Cone apart. Renowned for dry powder and plenty of it, Treble Cone receives an average annual snowfall of 5.5 metres and has an average maximum snow depth of 3.25 metres. Its proximity to the Southern Alps means reliable snow conditions and weather, and its geography means it is protected from the bitterly cold southerly winds. Spread over three large basins the mountain has trails to suit all ages and skill levels. From the purpose built learner area, long groomed beginner and intermediate trails, challenging advanced runs and ungroomed powder, and infamous natural pipes and chutes, Treble Cone has it all. The learners’ area with snowmaking facilities is located near the base building, the wide, gentle slope has an easy gradient and is groomed every night. This is serviced by an easy-to-use platter lift. Two trails - 'Easy Rider' (3.5km) and 'Main Street' (2km) - provide long, well-groomed slopes for beginners and intermediates along with many other groomed runs. Earthworks over Summer 2005 have created a NEW Upper High Street which now extend Treble Cones longest groomed run to 4.5km. These runs are all serviced by either the high-speed six-seater detachable chairlift or NEW quad chairlift. Treble Cone offers more intermediate and advanced terrain than any other South island ski area with off-piste powder skiing and boarding unrivalled. Treble Cone continues to offer the greatest free-riding terrain in the region for snowboarders. There are natural half pipes on the upper mountain and a terrain park is built each year. Snow Park Size: 60 skiable hectares Location: 34 km from Wanaka Beginner: 20% Intermediate: 50% Advanced: 30% Featuring an FIS standard superpipe, a quarterpipe, big kickers, 40+ rails, hits, jumps and more, Snow Park NZ has something for everyone. Recently added is the Half Pint beginner park, a playground of boxes, jumps and rails designed specifically for the novice skier or boarder. The newest resort in the region, Snow Park NZ opened to the public in 2002. Today it hosts several top ski and snowboard events, such as the Burton NZ Open, Billabobng Snowstock and NZ Freeski Open. One of few resorts in New Zealand capable of relying 100% on snowmaking, Snow Park NZ has an impressive fleet of 33 fully automatic snow guns covering the 60 acres of resort land. Snow Park NZ is a great place to relax for a meal after a day on the slopes at the brand new Woolshed Restaurant & Bar, a full-service facility with a sprawling deck over-looking the action at the resot and views of the breathtaking Southern Alps. Ohau Size: 125 skiable hectares Location: 42km from Twizel Beginner: 20% Intermediate: 50% Advanced: 30% Ohau, as part of the Ohau Range in the Main Divide, is endowed with reliable snowfall and fine weather. Ohau is serviced by a double chairlift, a platter and a snow mat. The main trails are groomed regularly. ‘The Boulevard’ offers learners and intermediates an easy and fun skiing or snowboarding experience from the top of the chairlift down to the base facilities. The chairlift also provides access to a wide variety of slopes suitably challenging for experts and exciting for intermediates. A very gentle slope, serviced by a snow mat, is ideal for beginners. The platter lift is more exciting for the developing beginner. The vertical rise on the chairlift is 345 m and the length 920 m. It gives access to a variety of terrain from wide open intermediate slopes to extreme chutes. Mt. Hutt Size: 365 skiable hectares Location: 105km from Christchurch Beginner: 25% Intermediate: 50% Advanced: 25% Located at the foot of the Southern Alps 2086m above sea level, Canterbury’s Mt Hutt is devoted to its laidback and genuine Kiwi atmosphere. Its breathtaking views on a clear day stretch across the Canterbury Plains all the way from the Pacific Ocean to Aoraki Mt Cook. A vast mountain with 472 hectares of diverse terrain, Mt Hutt is at once relaxed, friendly, challenging and exciting. Recent major developments saw a whole new ski area layout, the addition of a high-speed six-seater chairlift running from the base to the top of the mountain in less than 5 minutes, a new 140m long surface conveyor lift and 1.2km dedicated novice trail. 2008 improvements of more snowmaking, Huber’s Hutt base building development and a new mini terrain park for beginners and novices mean you’ll now experience some of the best facilities and terrain mix available in the South Island. An amazing variety of terrain is on offer, extreme skiers and riders head for the steeper challenges of the double black diamond runs of the South Face, while intermediates take on some of the widest groomed slopes in the country and novices can enjoy the dedicated beginner areas and novice trails within the basin. Mt Hutt also has plenty to offer freestylers. Its new mini park now offers a skill progression path into the 10,000m2 UP&GO Terrain Park, featuring a variety of kickers, rails and tabletops, or FIS specification half-pipe. Mt Hutt hosts many social and racing events, and many of the world’s best racers train at Mt Hutt, earning its reputation as the ‘Capital of Speed’.
